Creation & Evolution: The Basics

In the beginning, Lord, you laid the foundations of the earth, and the heavens are the work of your hands.: Heb. 1:10 NIV

If the (evolutionary) evidence for the Origin and Complexity of Life cannot withstand the scrutiny of
Science, continued support for evolution makes no sense at all!

Life, the seasonal cycles of the Earth, the Solar System, and the entire Universe have the appearance of design, order, and purpose. The questions are:

How did order originate?
Was the source of the order God or Naturalism (unguided processes)? ... and
Does the evidence suggest a supernatural 6-day creation according to the book of Genesis or has the material world (including life) evolved over billions of years?

Where to begin?

Order throughout the Universe

Michael Rowan-Robinson, Ph.D. Professor of Astrophysics stated in his book, Our Universe: An Armchair Guide:

The existence of clusters of galaxies and of galaxies themselves pose a very interesting question for astronomers and cosmologists. How did they form? Why are the stars not spread uniformly throughout the universe? Why galaxies are found in clusters has been one of the most hotly contested topics of theoretical cosmology in the past decade, with a definitive answer still not in sight.

Comment: Although Dr. Rowan-Robinson appears to support eons for the age of the Universe, his comments regarding the order that exists should give second thought to those who believe in a naturalistic cause for the physical worlds.

The concept of order is approached quite differently from each side of the Creation/Evolution discussion and is generally dictated by one's worldview. A degree of order can be observed and attributed to natural causes. The magnitude of order cited by Dr. Robinson, however, suggests that a careful review and interpretation of the available evidence is required.

The following statement from a creation scientist builds more specifically on the thoughts of Dr. Rowan-Robinson regarding the lack of guided potential available to naturalism.

This fundamental assumption of naturalism is contrary to our observation that the order that we observe in our world comes from an intelligent direction. In order to do science, one must assume that the universe is orderly, stable, and rational, but this assumption does not make any sense in a pagan or evolutionary worldview.
Vernon R. Cupps, Ph.D. Nuclear Physics, Acts & Facts, Institute for Creation Research, August 2014.

Comment: Consider the quote from Dr. Cupps above, that order, stability, and and rationality apply to the entire universe. When conditions remain constant, atoms will always react in the same manner, molecules and their formation can be studied as science strives to create cures for diseases, tidal changes are predictable, and Halley's Comet will orbit the every ~75 years. Without the benefit of intelligence, order, stability, and rationality would not be defining characteristics of the Universe and the world as we know it would not exist. A rational mind must admit that our material existence would be impossible without intelligent oversight that is beyond our ability to comprehend.

If neither Creation or Evolution can be conclusively proven, how can truth be determined when both rely on the same evidence?

While considering the order that exists, it may be wise to also explore how living organisms and terrestrial bodies, all consisting of matter, came into being in the first place. All theories on the origin of the Cosmos, the Earth, and life require a beginning, and all must accept that at some point in time something was created from nothing. Assumptions about the past may be made only by what is observed in the physical world today (fossils, geolocal structures, etc.), but assumptions in the present still remain inconclusive with regard to what has actually occurred in the past.

As a one-time super-natural event, the six day Creation by God is not one that can be duplicated and therefore cannot be proven or disproven by the scientific method (see next section for Scientific Method). In like kind, a one-time naturalistic event is also not available for duplication and testing. The absence of empirical evidence for a Biblical and a naturalistic understanding of origins should both be categorized as faith. We must ask, Do the principles of science support or deny the historic evidence that can be observed? Does Cell Theory allow for the possibility of a naturalistic origin of life? Was there an exception to the 1st Law of Thermodynamics, as suggested by evolutionary belief, which allows for the one-time creation of all matter by an undefined natural process? or, Do the answers lie outside of science? These and other questions will be addressed in the subsequent pages.

Evolutionists most often deny that faith plays a part in their theory and that their model is completely supported by science. The Creationist embraces faith along with science to advance the truth of the Biblical narrative. Both beliefs cannot be true.

We are well aware that many areas of science may never be proven "beyond a shadow of a doubt." A significant issue in the debate over Creationism vs. Darwinism is the subjective use of the evidence by evolutionary believers to support their theory as fact. The evidence is the same for both sides of the argument and should be carefully scrutinized objectively. The distortion of evidence by the proponents of evolution and the use of ad hominem arguments to discredit those who believe in a recent and supernatural Creation have no place in even the most basic levels of scientific discovery.

The existence in the present of a fossilized dinosaur skeleton may reveal (through scientific analysis) diet, locomotion, size, and habitat. What is not revealed is its ancestral line when that line is from a hypothetical previous and less complex species. The (fossilized) observational evidence will assist in providing details about the life-style of a dinosaur, but speculation on the original creation of the species remains inconclusive. The acceptance of the historic events, supported by the observational evidence, must eventually become an act of faith: faith in a Creator God, or faith in the natural process of evolution by time and chance.
